It was a privilege to provide instruction for the inaugural Tough Tits Introduction to Ski Mountaineering. A crew of women who love a collaborative adventure took part on the scheduled days in August and September 2023, to expand their skillset and take their backcountry riding to the next level. The stoke was high and the vibe joyous!

Our climbing instructor and splitboard guide Chris Zinon, assisted by backcountry ski guide and Arc’teryx ambassador Chess Smee, covered the following topics through the day:

  • Ice axes – types, uses and self arrests
  • Crampon techniques
  • Snow, rock and ice anchors
  • Belays
  • Abseiling
  • Knots and hitches for mountaineering
  • Trip plan and prep
